|The James D. Mullins Leadership Award recognizes administrators who show exceptional support of reading. The nominee is a strong advocate for reading, teachers and children; has a vision for a school or school system; consistency makes decisions based on a belief system, is creative in finding resources to support reading programs, and is a strong supporter of reading and/or VSRA or other reading-oriented organizations or groups.||December 15||Julie Sandzimier|
|The International Scholarship Award is available for VSRA members who are making a literacy presentation at a reading conference or conducting professional development outside of the United States of America. Two scholarships of $225 each may be awarded to an individual or group. Recipient(s) will present a session sponsored by the International Projects Committee at the VSRA annual conference the following year.

|Honor Council status is an award of excellence given each year to recognize those councils that actively engage in a variety of opportunities to serve their members, local communities, VSRA, and the international literacy community. Merit Council status is another award of excellence given by VSRA to recognize the activities of local councils in promoting literacy through service.

|The Virginia State Reading Association (VSRA) awards two honors to local councils based on membership: The Anne Henry and The Betty Yarborough. The membership awards are named for two past-presidents who exemplified the beliefs and values of VSRA which directly influenced and impacted our association’s membership.
The VSRA Anne Henry Award is awarded to the three councils with the greatest percentage of renewing members. A renewing member is an individual who joined the previous membership year and the current membership year by April 15th.
The VSRA Betty Yarborough Award is awarded to the three councils with the greatest increase in the percentage of members. The percentage is based on comparing the previous membership year to the current membership year by April 15th. Councils are compared to councils of similar size.
|The Jones-Daly Award for Faculty Involvement recognizes college and university faculty, or those affiliated with a college or university, who demonstrate involvement and leadership in PK-12 literacy in the state. These individuals partner and support the efforts of VSRA and local reading councils, and they engage in visible efforts to improve PK-12 literacy at the state level. The award is named for Dr. Jill Jones, who was passionate about reading in Virginia and who was tragically killed in the very beginning of her term as Virginia College Reading Educators (VCRE) President in 2010 and for Dr. JoAnn Daly, former President of VCRE, who had hoped to develop such an award for many years.||December 15||Julie Gray|
|The IRA Award for Technology and Reading honors educators in grades K–12 who are making an outstanding and innovative contribution to the use of technology in reading education. Virginia State Reading Association is seeking to recognize one K-12 educator from Virginia who will serve as our nominee to the International Reading Association committee.

|Do you have an idea for a project to benefit literacy in your community? Then you need to apply for the Community Service Award. This grant is for local councils and provides $600.00

|The VSRA Young Writers Grant is sponsored by the Virginia State Reading Association to support a local reading council’s writing project. The goal of the grant is to encourage local councils to emphasize writing and to provide a maximum of $700.00 in financial support for the implementation of projects.||December 15||Tammy Williams|
|Teacher research is a way that educators may examine their instructional practices in order to improve teaching and learning conditions for students. VSRA provides funding for K-12 teachers interested in planning, implementing, and sharing the results of their literacy-related research. Such work leads to long-term, meaningful change.
A grant of up to $500.00 will be awarded at the annual conference.
The Virginia State Reading Association invites graduate and doctoral students in literacy- related programs to submit research proposals. VSRA seeks to support emerging researchers as they contribute to the field’s growing body of effective, research-based practices in literacy education.

|The Teachers as Readers grant of up to $500 is sponsored by the Virginia State Reading Association to support a Teacher as Readers group in a local council or a special project from an already established group. The Teachers as Readers project gives educators opportunities to read varieties of current literature, discuss readings, and share strategies for using literature in the classrooms.
The award will be announced at the spring conference. The council awarded the grant will share its use in the VSRA newsletter or governing council meeting.
